Amazon S3 storage planning checklist

Compare S3 storage classes by region, access pattern, retention, and total workload costs.

Start by choosing the AWS Region where the data should live. Latency, data residency, resilience requirements, and the location of compute services can all affect that choice. Prices and availability differ by Region, so compare a specific Region rather than a global headline. Match the class to access Estimate how often objects are read and how quickly they must be available. Frequently accessed objects, infrequent-access classes, and archive classes have different storage, retrieval, and minimum-duration rules. A lower storage rate can be offset by retrieval charges or early deletion when the workload does not match the class. Count requests and transfer Inventory PUT, GET, LIST, lifecycle, and restore activity. Include expected downloads and the destination of outbound data. Replication, inventory, monitoring, and lifecycle requests may create additional billable operations. Verify the exact rate Use the official AWS pricing page and select the relevant Region and storage class. Record the date, unit, tier, and any minimums. StorageMetric does not invent missing rates; confirm every figure and service term with AWS before making a decision.
