Estimating data transfer time
Convert data size and connection speed into a realistic starting point for migration planning.
The Upload Time Calculator converts decimal gigabytes to megabits and divides by connection speed. For 1 GB, the conversion is 8,000 megabits. Divide seconds by 3,600 to obtain hours.
Effective throughput
Advertised link speed is an upper bound. Protocol overhead, disk speed, encryption, latency, and rate limits reduce effective throughput. Test a representative transfer and use its sustained speed when planning a migration window.
Reliability
Large migrations need retry handling, checksums, and a way to resume interrupted work. Many small objects can take longer than a single large object with the same total size because each request has latency and processing overhead.
Cost
Confirm outbound and request charges before moving data. A fast connection does not imply free transfer, and your source and destination can both have relevant charges.
