Understanding cloud storage costs

Learn how storage, requests, outbound transfer, and retention policies affect your cloud storage bill.

A storage bill has more than one component. Start with your billable storage volume, then account for outbound traffic and API requests. Storage Providers typically bill storage by a usage average over a month. The billable amount may include replicated data, retained versions, or minimum storage commitments. Check whether the provider uses decimal GB or binary GiB and convert your measurements consistently. Requests and transfers Uploads, downloads, listings, and other operations can have separate request prices. Outbound data can be charged differently depending on destination. StorageMetric's simple estimator combines one storage rate, one outbound rate, and one request rate. If your workload has several request classes, calculate them separately and add the totals. Retention and retrieval Lower-cost archive classes can impose retrieval fees, retrieval delays, and early-deletion charges. Minimum retention periods can make frequent deletion expensive. Read the provider's policy before choosing a storage class. Verification Use the official pricing page for your region and record the date of your check. A plan without an entered rate is unavailable for price evaluation; it is not free. Taxes, negotiated discounts, support plans, and network services can change the final amount.
